Malahide UTD V PAFC U8 Sunday Red
Venue : Gannon Park
The Portmarnock AFC under eight teams have been back training since mid January and today was an eagerly awaited game for the Sunday Red squad as they visited near neighbours Malahide United in Gannon Park for the first fixture of the new season. Both teams have moved up to a different colour and having played each other three times in the half season before Christmas a competitive game was to be expected.
The opening minutes of each game saw strong tackling and great defending from both sides as the opening goals proved hard to come by. The boys in amber and black opened the scoring and this was the trigger that allowed the play to move from end to end with both teams scoring to keep their team in the game. Two rapid hatricks each from Rian Rogan and Jack O'Conner in the first games, brought beaming smiles to the player's faces. Portmarnock AFC have players with quick feet and drag backs a plenty in Cillian Mc Cauley, Eoin Madden and Seb Kenny. Strikers in the making have to be Leon Fitzgerald, Donnacha Lynch and Robert Dempsey.
Danial O'Brien stood out in goal during one game and made a triple save with hands and feet to deny Malahide a certain goal. Strong running and towering defending helped Portmarnock no end as Niall Keating, Michael Beglan and Alfie Thompson proved impossible to break through in defence and midfield.
Last but not least we must mention Ronan McNally having scored two in one game in the first half, was put in goal for the second half. None too happy and thinking his chance of a hat trick was going to elude him, he attempted to strike from distance with the goalkeepers jersey on, he came close on a couple of occasions, but alas he had to be satisfied with a brace.
There were smiles and handshakes at the finish as the game was played in the finest of spirits with Malahide having contributed to a very enjoyable first game of the season. The boys in red and black have some fine players of their own and scored a couple of outstanding goals on the day. We would like to thank Malahide United for welcoming us as, Malahide's director of coaching Kevin Craven was most complimentary of the Portmarnock AFC Red squad.
