Portmarnock AFC welcomed Leixlip United FC to Paddy's Hill in a top of the table clash in a bid to earn promotion to the top tier in the LSL.
The first half was very much a tight affair with neither side giving much away which saw the team go in level at half time. The first 10 minutes of the second half continued to be a cagey affair until Leixlip opened the scoring sparking the game into light. Portmarnock now had to go for it and started to put together some nice passages of play stretching the Leixlip back 4.
With 65 minutes on the clock a neat passing move resulted in the Chris Burgess being put clean through and the Leixlip keeper came rushing off his line to take down his man and the ref pointed to the stop. With the pressure on his shoulders Philly Rusk neatly slotted the peno away. 1:1 and game on!
However not long after the restart a mistake at the back saw Leixlip gain back control of the game leaving Portmarnock 20 minutes to try claim something from the game. At this stage Leixlip were playing with their tails up but all credit to the Portmarnock lads the 'never say die' attitude ran right through the team.
Then with only 5 minutes on the clock Graham Rusk chased down what looked like a lost cause. The Leixlip keeper decided to come for it and Rusk superbly lifted the ball over his head, dipping into the top corner. Cue mass celebrations!! The Portmarnock lads saw out the remaining minutes of the match with no concerns and now put themselves in a very strong position for promotion with their last game of the season against St. John Bosco. Hat's off to the lads who dug deep and put on an inspiring performance for the supporters in attendance. Onwards and upwards!!!
