Match report's from the weekend 13th/14th May
Leaders grab last minute equaliser at Porto!
Some would argue the late kick off for Porto in the DDSL Sun Division 2 provided too much preparation time for the opposition today. The Porto team, restless by 1pm, were biting at the bit to get play under way and challenge the title contenders from 3rd spot.
Good early play from Porto, with the wind in their favour, started well. Keeper Nathan Cooke looked confident following injury, and both Colin Buckley and Josh Case kept a stable back line partnership for their team mates in front. Frustration grew for the home side, with the opposing keeper rarely tested early on. But Tolka proved resilient, creating chances of their own. The home keeper proved relentless until the away side crept a ball just past the home Porto keeper with around 20 minutes played.
Tireless play through centre mid Captain, Joey KInnane, continued for the home side, nice switching of play kept the opposition in his pocket at times, and within 5 minutes of the opener an intelligent ball from Kinnane, fed Ian Goodwin onto his preferred left foot, connected with a first time rasping shot right into the top corner, keepers left. Game on….arguably goal of the season so far for Porto.
With the half approaching, the Tolka defence began to jitter, and tireless work from Ian Moran up front, Dylan Beed on left flank and Sean Killeen on the right provided a wealth of chances. A settled Porto took strong position for a home side attacking corner, and Joey Kinnane took responsibility, drifting a peach of a ball right into the danger area, above the keeper and into the net….2-1 at the interval.
Not a game for the faint hearted, Porto should have been 3 up at the half, but left the door open at the start of the 2nd for long periods with a biting Tolka Rovers. Defending high, last gasp defending at times, meant an equaliser was on its way for Tolka. A suspicion of offside allowed Tolka to gain their 2nd.
Poised at 2-2, but belief remained for Porto with good shape and winners of every 50/50 against the wind. Porto were on the hunt for a winner. So much so, the ball fell just outside of the opposition box and Captain Kinnane arrived once more, for a beautiful right foot shot that glided well over the keeper into the net.
With less than 15 to go, that felt like an age, heroic defending by the home team failed to continue, and with less than a minute to go a ball dropped kindly for the away team, 3-3 from a corner kick. No sooner was the ball put back on the spot for tip off once again…the final whistle blew.
Heart breaking for Porto today, who wanted 3 points, but a draw was the painful truth and a fair result. Not so long ago Porto would have settled for just turning up to these matches - but not anymore, the strip was worn with passion and character today and a red-faced squad at the end said it all for the coaches and parents.
Well done Porto!! We’ll leave the main comments to the pundits on MOTD2 (…LOL)
…or maybe even a certain Eamon Dunphy who is soon to arrive…he loves Tolka!
