A great team never gives up. The u11 Sat team didn't give up against Peamount and were rewarded with a well deserved point in an absolute thriller. With Portmarnock having only the minimum 7 players available - this was always going to be a tough test.
The game started at a frantic pace and Peamount were straight into it, immediately putting Portmarnock under pressure. The home side found it difficult to get out of their own half and Noah was certainly having a busy time in goal.
Karl and Sam in defense were solid managing to keep the onslaught at bay. The midfield pairing of Daniel and Jake were working hard to release the strike partnership of Dylan and Fintan.
Unfortunately, a good passage of play saw Peamount break through and take the lead & in fairness the opposition player, he took his chance well.
The goal seemed to spur on Porto & we now found ourselves getting on the ball more, with Noah quick & strong on kick-outs, Daniel & Jake were winning 50/50 battles and feeding Dylan & Fintan, who as we know have blistering pace & were now causing the Peamount defense problems. Porto were unlucky with a couple of shots just missing the target. The remainder of the half was end to end play, with Karl using his strength & stature to force the opposing forwards wide & away from goal, with Sam covering the inside to keep the number of attacks to a minimum .. Noah, again had his angles covered & a couple of great saves to keep the half-time score to 1-0.
The second half saw Peamount introduce some fresh legs & got fortunate second goal from a corner. This was early in the second half, so plenty of time to get back into it. Porto didn't let their heads drop and stuck to the game plan, playing the ball wide, through midfield and onto our strikers. It was wonderful to see every single Portmarnock player give 110%, battle hard for each other & their club. They were much the better side in this half & the supporters on the line knew we were going to get something.
Midway through the second half, Daniel got his head onto a great cross, the keeper parried it & Daniel was already following up on the loose ball, bravely forcing it past 2 Peamount defenders and over the line .... now it was game on!!!
Peamount were now under all sorts of pressure .. Porto were attacking in waves, but an equalizer just wouldn't come. Time was rapidly running out & you got the feeling it just was not to be for Porto. With seconds left, a cynical foul saw Porto awarded a free just outside the box.
Every outfield Porto player was in the opposition box waiting for Jake's fee-kick .. Karl cleverly using his strength to bully the defenders & keeper on the line .... & then it happened, Jake with a Beckhamesque free hit the target. The keeper got hands to it, but such was the power & accuracy of the shot he couldn't keep it out .. great goal!! It was literally the last kick of the game 2-2 ... what a result!! ... as was commented afterwards it felt like a win.
Congratulations to this brave Portmarnock side ... they simply refused to be beaten.
