Seniors 1sts - 3rd Round match Report
Portmarnock 4-2 Riverstown FC
This much anticipated intermediate cup 3rd round match started at a high tempo with the home side starting on the front foot . In the first five minutes Portmarnock found themselves 2 up with Chris Burgess getting on the scoresheet twice . Even though Riverstown looked shell shocked they started to play a bit of football and looked tidy on the ball . With the Cork team looking very comfortable on the ball without really threatening Robbie Byrnes goal Portmarnock upped the tempo again and found themselves 4 up through Dave Reddin and Chris Burgess completing his hat trick . It could easily have been 5 or 6 but chances went a begging and Riverstown started to get a bit of a foothold in the game as the home side sat back to their detriment. Riverstown pulled back 2 goals to half the deficit and very nearly got a third before half time as the ball was knocked across the front of Byrnes goal with no one to put a finish to a very inviting ball . As the ref blew the whistle to what was a crazy half of football that could've been 6-0 or 4-3 the score stood at 4-2 . The second half was never going to live up to this and with Riverstown pushing forward they were always going to leave gaps at the back with both Philip Rusk and Darren Kelly going agonisingly close . Portmarnock closed the game out in what was a much quieter second half and progress to the 4th round and the 1st round of the Daily Mail FAI Senior Cup too . All in all a good day's work !!!
