SHELBOURNE Vs PORTMARNOCK AFC MMI Cup Report
SHELBOURNE SSAFC 2 PORTMARNOCK AFC 0
Shelbourne booked themselves a place in the last eight of the MMI Cup with a 2-0 win over Portmarnock AFC in St Annes Park on Saturday afternoon. Shels were on fire from the off and took the lead in the eight minute. Walsh was the man behind the goal when he chased a ball over the top and fired in an effort that Ryan McRory did well to parry, but Shane Creevey was on hand to fire the loose ball into the roof of the net. Portmarnock’s best response came from set-pieces and they did get the ball in the net in the 30th minute only for it to be ruled out for a foul of the home keeper.
Portmarnock upped their game after the break and should have been on level terms minutes after the restart when Donal McDonagh was put through on goal, rounded the Shels keeper but as he went to pull the trigger the ball bounced away from him and he blazed wide when it looked like it would be a certain equalizer. That was quickly followed by another ruled out goal this time as David White finished off a good move, but the referee saw a hand being used in the build-up and disallowed the effort. 5 minutes later the Ports had another good chance when McDonagh fired in a free kick that was blocked, but fell kindly back to him but he saw his effort smothered by the Shels keeper. They were chances that should have been taken but as the half drew on the Shels defence grew in stature and kept the Ports at bay.
Portmarnock did have Ryan McRory to thank for keeping in the tie when he produced a string of good saves to keep the Shels front line efforts out. But there was nothing he could do when the home side bagged their insurance goal in the 20th minute of the second period as Luke Dillon was on to a through ball and got in a shot that beat McRory but it came back off the upright, and Alex O’Toole was on hand to nab home the rebound.
Portmarnock will feel they left this one behind them but Shelbourne were deserved winners and advance to quarter finals of the Cup.
