On Friday 7th September, the 3rd annual Govan Jolliffe Byrne 6-aside memorial tournament kicked off. 16 teams, separated into 4 groups of 4, battled it out for the chance to become champions of the shield and cup.
The tournament is a 2 day event which serves in memory to Govan, who sadly passed away whilst travelling in Africa during the summer of 2015. Govan was an integral part of both the Football and GAA clubs of Portmarnock and was a barman in Portmarnock Sport and Leisure Centre.
As Saturday’s play came to a close, the Shield final was won by the youth of Borussia Portmund, captained by James Hendricken.
The cup final, featured the same two teams for the 3rd year running , the Average Joes and Toffee’s Troopers.
To the neutral’s dismay, the hotly tipped favourite Toffee’s troopers led by Brian Kane, won 3-1. Their 3rd GJB Cup final win.
A great weekend was had by all involved with special thanks to Portmarnock AFC for equipment, Fingal County Council & Naomh Mearnog for their permission to use pitches and to all volunteers who helped throughout the weekend.
For pictures of the event, they are available on Facebook on the Govan Jolliffe Byrne 6aside Memorial tournament Page.
